Meeting Place and Time: We'll meet at 7:20 AM for a 7:30 departure at the Oilville Park and Ride. Be prepared to give your driver $10-15. If you live closer to the mountains and want to meet at the trailhead, contact the hike leader in advance to arrange this.
Hike Details: I have reserved the Corbin Cabin, located on the Hughes River in Central Shenandoah NP, for a night. After parking at the Old Rag lot, we will start a loop hike, counter clockwise, for two days. Day 1 (Wednesday): After following the Nicholson Hollow Trail for about 1.5 miles, we will cross the Hughes River (bring water shoes in case the river cannot be rock hopped), then we'll continue uphill on the Corbin Mountain Trail. At the junction with the Indian Run Trail, we'll take that trail to Corbin Cabin. Day one will cover 7 miles with 2,400 feet up and 1,200 feet down. Day 2 (Thursday). We'll leave the cabin late morning and hike almost all downhill on the Nicholson Hollow Trail, covering about 4.5 miles and dropping about 1,300 feet.
Notes: you should bring typical backcountry camping gear, other than a tent. This should include a stove, food, water filter, sleeping bag with pad, and spare clothing. I will carry a small bear canister that should be adequate for most or all of our post-dinner food and sundries, mainly to keep any mice at bay. There are bunks for five people in the cabin. The wood stove in the cabin is not available for use. There is an outhouse and the cabin is just feet from the river, a good source for filtered drinking water.
I have paid a $45 fee to rent the cabin from PATC. Anyone who wants to contribute to this is welcome to do so.
