The Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club

The Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club (ODATC) is an organization of individuals and trail-related organizations who meet to recreate in the outdoors in various ways as well as act as stewards of a portion of the Appalachian Trail and the public lands it runs through.  Our recreational  endeavors focus on hiking in Virginia but includes biking, paddling and touring as well.   While the majority of our events occur in Virginia our only true limits are what members wish to limit themselves to. Learn more

THE ODATC EXPERIENCE - CURRENT ISSUES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Trail Maintenance Training, April 16, 2026

Training is limited to forty participants.  The Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club (TATC) is conducting a free Introduction to Trail Maintenance Course

This course is being held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM on the Appalachian Trail (Maupin Field Area)
Camp Free at Devils Backbone Base Camp, 30 Three Ridges Lane, Roseland, VA 22967 - April 10-12, 2026.

Annual Hike Across Maryland, May 23, 2026. Forty-Three miles in one day!

Join the Mountain Club of Maryland's challenging one day 41 mile Hike Across Maryland on the Appalachian Trail.

Hike Across Maryland (HAM) is a one-day hike that will be held on May 23, 2026. It starts in Maryland near the PA/MD border at Pen Mar Park, follows the Appalachian Trail(AT) through Maryland, and ends in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The distance is about 41 miles over rocky and rough trail with several significant climbs. This hike is intended for the serious hiker who has done three or more training hikes of 15 miles and more. At a bare minimum, hikers should be able to hike at a rate of 2.5 to 3 miles an hour for 14 hours over mountainous terrain.

The registration fee for the hike is $60 plus the Eventbrite processing fees of $5.87. The cost covers snacks and water/Gatorade at nine checkpoints, including a lunch at Washington Monument Park checkpoint, a continental breakfast Saturday morning, a bed in the dorms if needed, and a HAM T-Shirt.

The ODATC Mission

Constructing and maintaining foot trails for hikers on the Appalachian Trail between Reeds Gap and Rockfish Gap. 

Monitoring and maintaining the borders of National Park Service lands.

Providing excursions on these trails and other areas. 

Offering educational activities related to the need for preserving the great outdoors.
