Environmental Rally at State Capitol Notice

Hello!

At noon on June 2 (the eve of National Trails Day), the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) will join hikers to peacefully rally and then hike around the Capitol grounds in Richmond to raise awareness on the impact two proposed fracked-gas pipelines -- the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) and the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) -- will have on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (ANST). We cordially invite you and members of your group to join us!

As a long-time member of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) and a lifelong hiker of the ANST, Executive Director Mike Tidwell is motivated to do everything possible to stop these pipelines. CCAN has been working with many great partners, including the ATC, toward this effort.

The MVP and the ACP are slated to cross the ANST and will require easements that are 125 feet wide, destroying private and public lands alike and threatening viewscapes. As if that’s not bad enough news, recent analysis has shown that construction of the ACP alone will flatten 38 miles of ridgetops in West Virginia and Virginia from 10 to 60 feet. These pipelines will destroy some of the most precious natural areas in the Commonwealth, in addition to posing significant threats to our water and air quality.

Earlier this week, Governor McAuliffe issued a cap on carbon emissions. He showed us that he understands the detrimental impacts of continuing to rely on fossil fuels. Yet he still supports the pipelines. We need to convince him change his course.

At the conclusion of our hike on June 2nd, we will provide Governor McAuliffe with a gift of compasses, reminding him that he has the ability to change course on pipelines. We would love to have you and members of your group to join us, so please share this invitation widely.

Please let Mike know if you can join him -- email him at mtidwell@chesapeakeclimate.org or call/text him at 240-460-5838. You’re also welcome to call/text me directly at 757-871-8639.

Thanks!

Shuttle service in VA needed

I am writing this letter to your organization in hopes of obtaining information regarding trail angels in your area of coverage on the AT. I’ve been walking the AT since 2013 and learned a great deal about the trail, my hiking capabilities, and lastly the kindness and hospitality of trail angels. I haven’t been able to complete the trail for various reasons. This year my goal is to make it to Maine.

My friend and I plan to take our cars and move them along the trail with a 4-6 day walk between each resupply and/or zero day. We’re also planning to provide trail magic and trail angel services during our zero days. I realized after my many times on the trail how wonderful it felt to receive trail magic and trail angel assistance. I’ve begun the planning process to locate feasible spots along the trail where the trail crosses a major road, passes near or through a town or city, where a car can be parked safely. That’s where the trail angel comes in.

I would like to contact other trail angels and ask for their time and assistance to provide rides to and from the cars when parking the cars close to the trail is not feasible. I would like to pre-arrange their assistance prior to starting my trek in mid April. I left the trail in Damascus, VA this past June and that is where I plan to resume my walk.

If no information exists regarding a trail angel listing I would then request a referral to any person or other organization that you think may be able to help me. I can be reached via my email account or my cell phone. I thank you for your assistance. The great trail philosopher once said, “The hiker may be slow, but the trail is patient.”

On Monday November 17, Thomas Pearson passed away at the age of 98. He was a founding member of ODATC and the first president. I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Pearson but he established a legacy that I am grateful to have been part of.
ODATC Georgia AT Section "Slack Packers" Meet and Hike With Colorado Backpacker

Recently, six members of our club completed a week-long section hike of the Georgia AT as "Slack Packers". During most of the hikes, the group walked with a section backpacker named Brian from Colorado, with everyone thoroughly enjoying each other's company. At the end of the ODATC group's planned hike around seven miles from the NC border, a group photo was taken that included Brian using his camera. Once he returned to Colorado after finishing his planned section hike of the AT, Brian contacted the group via email and mailed them the photo. The email text and picture are included below. The ODATC members participating in this hike were Alex Alexander, Bill Beck, Jim Henry, Jim Hunt, Larry Kidd, Jim Metz, Bill Tennant, and Jeff Samuels.

Dear Larry and the rest of the Gang,

I just wanted to thank each of you for the kindness you showed me on my hike. I truly enjoyed the company and the conversations and I very quickly feel welcomed into your group.

As an update, after my one rest day, I hiked 18 and 15 miles and made it to my goal in North Carolina just past Albert Mountain. Camping those two nights went well, but were no competition to slack packing.

I hope you are all well and our paths cross again. Attached is the group photo.

Norovirus Spreading Up the AT

We have had an outbreak of Norovirus on the AT that appears to be moving our way. We are primarily concerned with the AT but it could spread to other trails. If you encounter hikers when on your trails, ask if they are aware of the norovirus and ask for any feedback about ill hikers and suspected locations. The poster below from ATC provides more information on the virus.

  Help_Prevent_Stomach_Bug.pdf

I've attached the poster developed for use along the A.T. between Hot Springs and Erwin earlier in the season. I believe the language was developed primarily from input from the Tennessee Dept. of Health, after learning about the situation on the Trail and the practices of hikers. They noted all the sick people they had interviewed had used only hand sanitizer. They seemed to think that hand sanitizer was better than nothing but not adequate by itself.

I don't know if there have been any studies to determine how effective hand-washing in the backcountry might be, especially if only cold water were used. But it's feasible with planning and preparation, if inconvenient. There are also some non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers that claim to be effective against norovirus and registered with the EPA. One is www.microbearmour.com, but it's expensive.

Camera Found north of VA56

A hiker by the name of "Rounder" contacted ATC to notify us that he found a camera phone on the A.T. about 1/2 to 1 mile north of VA 56. It was on the right side of the Trail going north, sealed in a plastic bag. He was on a day-hike, and on his return trip, placed it higher in the tree to be more visible.

His phone number is 803-708-3272 if anyone has questions.

May/June Newsletter

A newsletter is old fashioned in the modern world of instant communication loops, Twitter, and Facebook. However, it remains a tried-and-true method of sharing stories, trail-cautions, up-coming meetings, and hiking/activity information.

Here are some content ideas. Pictures are always welcome! Have you heard of a new hike-related product, a new trail, or a planned trip? There is never "just a hike." Was there a walk in the woods that you particularly enjoyed and why? Humorous situation? A learning opportunity? ODATC trail maintainers outclass any club on the AT (in my humble opinion) for their work ethic, support, and can-do attitudes. This is a time to be recognized for the hard work you do!

If you have anything you would like to contribute to the May/June Newsletter, please send you submissions to me at kdveilleux@gmail.com or odatc.newsletter@gmail.com. Your words and pictures will always be appreciated!

"Why in the hell do you climb mountains?" I can't explain this to other people. I love the physical exertion. I love the wind. I love the storms. I love the fresh air. I love the companionship in the outdoors. I love the reality. I love the change. I love the rejuvenating spirit. I love to feel oneness with nature. I'm hungry; I enjoy eating. I get thirsty; I enjoy the clear water. I enjoy being warm at night when it's cold outside. All these things are extremely enjoyable because, gosh, you're really feeling them, you're living them, your senses are really feeling. I can't explain it."
35 Reasons to Hike the AT

My name is Jeanette Kozlowski, and I am the social media manager at HikingBoots.com. It’s a pleasure to virtually meet you all! We recently put together a list of 35 reasons to hike the Appalachian Trail. This might be something fun to share with your site readers.

You can view the graphic here: http://hikingboots.com/appalachian-trail. It is accompanied by a blog post with a full list of 75 reasons to make the hike: http://news.hikingboots.com/75-reasons-to-hike-the-appalachian-trail/. This list was created in conjunction with the trail’s 75th anniversary.

After doing research about the trail and reading Bill Bryson’s book, I can only imagine what it is like to hike the entire thing. Incredible!

Thanks for considering it,
Images of waterbars

Waterbars were mentioned at the PotLuck lunch on Sat, Jan 19, 2013 and I thought I would Google waterbar images and I found the following link will give the images found:

  http://images.google.com/search?num=10&hl=en&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=663&q=water+bars+on+trails&oq=water+bars+on+trails&gs_l=img.3...1528.5495.0.5669.20.9.0.11.11.0.101.558.8j1.9.0...0.0...1ac.1.2czHkkrGlx0&surl=1&safe=active

NOTE: when viewing the page of images above, you can use the keys CTRL + to enlarge the images on the page or click CTRL + keys simultaneously several times to enlarge the images several times.

Then rather than clicking to each omage to view it, you can use the right arrow key to page thru these enlarged images...(using the right arrow key to move thru the images works on IE fine, not so good when using Flock)

Just thought I would share this since I am not always sure whether I am on the right page when it comes to the techniques concerning trail maintenance.

Please check out www.appalachiantrail.org/updates for the latest updates regarding the impact Hurricane Sandy has had on the Appalachian Trail.

Hurricane Sandy will have major impacts on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail particularly in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England states. If you had planned to hike this week, postpone your plans. If you are hiking now, use extreme caution during and following the storm. Please honor the closures below by exiting the Trail. Impacts from flooding and tree damage from high winds are likely to be extensive. Small stream crossings will become extremely hazardous with rainfall exceeding 6-to-8 inches in some locations. Emergency response may be delayed or nonexistent due to heavily taxed resources and access issues. Cell and electronic communications may not be available for an extended period. In some areas of the trail, users should be prepared for the potential of snow accumulation that could hinder foot travel and hasten the threat for hypothermia or frostbite. Hikers should always remember their obligations to potential rescuers, and stay safe and out of trouble. This is your responsibility!

Several areas that the Appalachian Trail passes through have been closed or have issued alerts.
Thanks for Trail Magic!

Thanks to our club sponsored trail magic event last month.

It inspired even more magic from 2 club members...

The Sunday after the official club trail magic day (I had a conflict) my wife Carol and I headed to the trail for a bit of magic. We had planned on setting up at Dripping Rocks, but found it already occupied by more magic-ers. We headed down to the Tye river crossing. We had the grill set up in the back of the truck and Carol had a serious spread laid out . I cooked burgers, dogs and brats and she oversaw everything else. Two hiking friends on the way back from their 40th anniversary trip stopped by to help. We ended up feeding 18 through hikers.

Sure enjoyed the magic from the other side last year. Almost as much fun on this side.

Help Needed with Konnarock

It's difficult to believe that with three weeks done we're already a quarter of the way through the 30th season of the Konnarock Crew. Thanks for all your help with the behind-the-scenes work required to get projects ready for the Crew.

I'm writing to again ask for your (and your clubs') help with Konnarock. We need more volunteers, particularly for the second half of the season, and I'd appreciate your help with recruiting club members and/or friends and family of club members to come out for a week or more of Konnarock. Please forward to someone you know that might be intrigued by the opportunity to spend a long weekend enjoying good company, good food and hard work on the Appalachian Trail. Please forward to folks in your club and ask them to forward as appropriate as well.

Some visitors had arrived by train and so needed transportation, and also the shuttle was a way to avoid vehicle congestion at popular sites. National Parks like the Grand Canyon and Denali make routine use of shuttles to protect pristine environments. So expand your horizons! Explore a new world, and leave the driving to us!

A shuttle will be available at Bear Creek Lake State Park on Saturday June 2, 2012 to take hikers to several points along the Willis River Trail, in the Cumberland State Forest, so that they can hike back to the Park. This will allow them to avoid either backtracking to return to the Park, or using two vehicles to get back and forth.

The Willis River Trail is a wonderful 16 mile linear trail developed by the Old Dominion Appalachian Trail Club. It winds through several distinct ecosystems found in the piedmont. It is a recreational gem waiting to be enjoyed. The BCL Shuttle will let folks off at three and six mile points up the trail, further by request. A Park Volunteer will act as a "sweep" to ensure folks get going the correct way. While it is regularly maintained, it is still a narrow hiking trail. Its use is for prepared hikers who have some experience. The terrain does not have long steep grades, but will involve some unlevel terrain on slopes and creek crossings with banks. If you like to hike and want to discover the Willis River Trail, this is a good introduction.

On Sunday, the shuttle will take BCLSP visitors on a day trip to High Bridge Trail State Park. We will let folks off at a parking lot about a mile or so from the iconic High Bridge itself. After a couple hours visiting this "rails to trails" Park, we'll shuttle folks back to Bear Creek Lake, stopping at both the campground and the cabin area.

There is a $5 per person fee for the shuttle (family rates available), and spaces are limited. For more information and to register for a seat, contact the Park Office at 804-492-4410, or bearcreek@dcr.virginia.gov.

ATC is looking for Volunteer Natural Resource Monitors

The ATC is looking for more volunteer Natural Resource monitors! We are in need of rare plant monitors and phenology monitors. For those of you unfamiliar, phenology is the study of periodic plant and animal life cycle events and how these are influenced by seasonal and interannual variations in climate. While rare plant monitoring requires specific knowledge of the species and area being monitored, phenology offers a broader monitoring platform for beginners and advanced monitors alike.

We currently have 37 Rare Plant areas along the AT in Southwest and Central Virginia, of which only 15 of are being monitored. We will also have at least 5 phenology sites on the AT in Southwest and Central Virginia. These sites will hopefully be officially designated within the next month.

The ATC will be conducting two workshops along the trail in Southwest Virginia this year to provide training for interested volunteers. The first will be held at the Konnarock Base Camp in Sugar Grove, VA on May 23, 2012. The other will likely be held either in the Roanoke area or North of there. The workshops will run the length of a day and will be divided into two sections. One half of the day will be dedicated to Rare Plant Monitoring, while the other half will be spent on Phenology monitoring. Attached is a flier for the workshop being held in Sugar Grove, VA.

Also note that I am still looking for a place to host the workshop either in the Roanoke area or North of there. So if you have a suggestion, I would welcome any input you may have.

Please pass this information along to anyone whom you may think is interested in becoming a volunteer monitor this season. All questions may be directed to myself via e-mail or phone. Please find my contact information below.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The “biggest” Full Moon of this year will occur this Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 11:34 p.m. EDT. On Saturday, the Moon will be closest to the Earth in its orbit, which is called the “perigee,” and thus appear ever-so-slightly larger to viewers on Earth. At a distance of 221,802 miles from Earth, this marks the closest approach to us as the Moon orbits around the Earth in an elliptical path, not an exact circle.
Hi, I plan on hiking south of Rockfish Gap each of the following weekends: April 27-29, May 4-6, May 11-13. I will be parking at Rockfish Gap in front of the old restuarant and then hiking into the Wolfe shelter on Friday, maybe late , i.e., after dark. then hiking south and camping some where (maybe even coming back to Wolfe to camp Sat nite) so that I will have no more than 15 miles to hike back to Rockfish Gap on Sunday. I am coming form the Highland Springs area if anyone was to join me. My email isDavid.L.Atkinson.Jr@gmail.com, we can discuss details. NOTE: I like to explore side trials so I will not be hiking all day but I am an early riser and like to be on the trail by 6:30am or earlier.

My First ODATC Hike

Today, I took my first ODATC hike. It was GREAT!! The leaders, Jim Hunt and Alice Preston did a super job herding the Wednesday hikers through the James River Park. This praise is coming from the person voted by her peers as, "Least likely to hike..." Believe me, it must have been good for me to have enjoyed walking the trails. Looking forward to next Wednesday's trip along another part of the James! Maybe I'll even graduate to the weekend hikes!

Upcoming Newsletter Submissions

Production of the March - April newsletter, 'The Walker', is beginning. Many great activities were listed in the first edition, which came out in January. If you were a coordinator or participant of any of those trips, treks, or talks, please submit a paragraph summarizing your event. It could be a funny story or something that caught your attention during the activity. Photos, with captions, are welcome!

Your contributions are very appreciated and due no later than February 15. Jenny Pendergrass provides a great list of upcoming activities for each newsletter. If you have anything planned for March and April, please tell her and include the upcoming activity in your paragraph(s), just a promotional thought.

Thanks!

CDT News

Received this news this week:

Notice to the Supporters of the Continental Divide Trail Alliance

The Continental Divide Trail Alliance (CDTA) was formed in 1995 to assist
federal land management agencies in the completion, management, and
protection of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (³Trail²). Since
that time, CDTA volunteers have dedicated nearly $5 million worth of labor
while individuals, foundations, and businesses committed more than $14
million. As of 2011, 2,050 miles of the Continental Divide Trail have been
completed.
Increasing pressures from development in the West, rising land costs, and
decreases in Federal funding threaten the completion of the Trial. Despite
the strong level of financial support from so many of you, overall
contributions and other revenues in recent years have significantly declined
with the economy. These revenues are the life blood of a non-profit
organizations like the CDTA.

Consequently, the CDTA Board of Directors has made the very difficult and
painful decision to cease operations of the CDTA. The financial condition
of the organization has been unstable and deteriorating for a number of
years. We have not been able to raise the necessary financial resources to
sustain the continued operations of the organization.

We are taking the actions necessary to complete our outstanding contracts
for work on behalf of the Trail. We are retaining the services of our
committed and outstanding staff to meet our current obligations, to the
extent financially possible, as we complete closing down CDTA over the nextfew weeks.

This is a sad day. But the Trail is still here, and it continues to inspire
us all. We are confident this inspiration will lead people to start a new
and stronger organization to continue the work on the Trail.

The Board and dedicated staff of the CDTA would like to thank each and every
one of you for your tremendous commitment and support of the Continental
Divide National Scenic Trail and the CDTA. We are truly humbled by the
selfless actions of so many and hopefully this will inspire another group of
people to continue the mission of CDTA.

This is a busy time of year for all of us. But let's give a mental round of applause to Janet Bailey for her dedication to THE WALKER and to ODATC. Upon reveiwing the resources she has given to me, it is apparent that she went way above and beyond to serve your club's interests.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Katie Veilleux

Club Mileage has been updated

Check out the latest ODATC mileage update that represents the mileage for all ODATC events since last January (and only for ODATC members). (Note that you must sign in in order to access this information under the members only section of the site.)

So far this year we've had 102 of our members participate on at least 1 hike and our grand total mileage for members on ODATC sponsored hikes is 3,140 miles, which isn't too shabby.

Thanks Randy for putting this together. Hike leaders if you haven't turned in your sheets to Randy please bring them to the next club meeting in November.

Rockville Park & Ride Closed May 2 - 13, 2011

A group of us met at the Rockville Park & Ride Sunday, May 1, to do some section maintenance & it was quite a shock to see "Park & Ride Closed" on a portable sign between the exit and the lot. Fortunately, the closure didn't start until the next day so we were able to park there. Any groups planning to meet at the P & R over the next 10 days or so will have to find another place to park .... the sign says "use alt. parking" but doesn't give specific alternatives. Our little group was speculating as to what sort of work might be done on the P & R that would require a closure of this length & we all have our fingers crossed that maybe it will be paved (?) ... some of those potholes in the lot are getting a bit deep!

Let the fun begin...

Want to know who’s hiking on ODATC trips? How about 42 members participating in at least 1 ODATC hike for a total of 400 miles since January!!! Leading the pack is Bill Tennant with five ODATC hikes and 30 miles so far this year. On his heels are Janet Bailey and Ken Baker with 26 miles each, and Jim Hunt with 25 miles. By the way, Ken Baker had at least a dozen crazy backpackers for the Paul Wolfe Shelter Freezeree in January. If you didn’t go, you missed out on Robert Duesberry’s family secret “Possum Stew” cooked over the fire, and the birthday cake for Beth Kirwin, Janet Johnston and Aseeyah Abdul-Karim. Congrats to Janet Bailey, Renata Manzo and Aseeyah Abdul-Karim on their first January backpack trip!!”

Stay tuned. The complete list will be posted shortly under the members only menu.

Leave No Trace TRAINER Course opportunity

There are 2 upcoming opportunities to take a Leave No Trace TRAINER Course and become an LNT TRAINER.

Both courses are being held April 9 and 10, in two separate, relatively-local locations, at low cost.

The USFS is a long-time supporter and sponsor of LNT, and we have a goal as a Forest to increase our skills in LNT.

These are LNT TRAINER courses (2 days including 1 overnight), and are less comprehensive or intense than an LNT MASTER EDUCATOR course (5 days, 4 overnites). However -- it is super good training and skills. And qualifies you to teach LNT Awareness to others.

Particularly valuable to those folks involved in Trails or Wilderness or Outdoor Education.

Also, we are currently working with the Cherokee National Forest to set up an LNT TRAINER course next fall, late October or early November, possibly with a Frontcountry emphasis, either on the MRNRA or in Northeast Tennessee.

Additional info on LNT and MASTERS and TRAINERS is at LNT.org.

These 2 courses:

Climbing Shasta

Jess Barton: Climb Against the Odds

As an avid hiker and outdoors woman, Climb Against the Odds sparked my interest immediately. Hiking for Breast Cancer Prevention? ... SIGN ME UP! Also, having a great love and concern for environmental issues, I was further compelled to participate in the Climb Against the Odds because of the Breast Cancer Fund works to identify – and advocate for elimination of – the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. Can you believe that a woman today has a 1 in 8 chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? Can you further believe that only 10% of breast cancer occurrences are due to a genetic predisposition to the disease? In fact, when all known risk factors and characteristics are added together, including family history, genetics, smoking and obesity, more than 50% of breast cancer cases remain unexplained.
